We made it to Hawaii

In the cockpit while flying in a C-17 from Travis AFB to Hawaii.
The flight was so cool it didn't seem like it was 5 hours long. (Michael)
The pilots let us wear their head sets, and they talked to us for a while. (John)
The pilots were both First Lieutenants and they didn't look much older than Michael and John. (Shelli)

I took this picture when we were in the cockpit. There was nothing but water for miles. (John)

We sat on cargo seats. It was better than flying in a normal plane- you could get up and walk around whenever you wanted. (Michael)
Box lunches. A sandwich, soda, water, candy bar, and bag of chips. Not bad for under $5 bucks.

Homeschooling kills some time on the long flight over. How about getting to go to Hawaii for a school day?
Trying to finish up work for the year. It made sense to use the flying time instead of beach time. (Shelli)

The view out of the the small window in the back.

Our cottage on the beach at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe. We got a Jeep for our rental car.
The view from the deck of the cottage.
We had plenty of sounds to lull us asleep - helicopters, jets, prop planes. (Shelli)
We kept getting woken up by roosters at 6:30 am. (John)
The rocks and tide pools were easy to get to but were pretty slippery. We found a really cool moray eel that was about two feet long. (Michael)

We had our own little cove. (Michael)

A roadside stop for lunch on the windward side. I had a super good Blue Hawaiian drink and some really good Kalua pork. (Michael)
It was the best pig I ever had (John)

A roadside stop for some healthy local produce.
I liked the fried bananas.  - (Michael)

At the Dole Pineapple plantation.

In the pineapple field.
I can spell Pinapple.  (John)
We learned about the history of Pineapple farming, James Dole's story, and couldn't believe how many miles of pineapple plants we drove by on the way to the plantation. (Shelli)

The Kailua Beach park was a great place for a lunch picnic.

The water color doesn't come through as brilliant as it really was.
The water was at least 5 different shades of blue. (John)

Through the looking glass.

Rabbit Island in the background from a scenic overlook.
There were two guys on top of a cliff and it looked like they were about to commit suicide, but they were just paragliders. - (Michael)

The waves were really powerful in the area between the Southern point and Diamond Head.
You can't tell from this picture, but the water looked like it was glowing bright blue. - (Michael)

Shelli and John watching Michael and me trying to time the waves just right for a picture.

There was a neat little cave right by the edge.

Serious exploration.

Compare the size of the splash on the left to John and Michael on the right.

See the fisherman in the left side? The waves were coming up to where he was standing and could have washed him over easily.

We moved out of the cottage and over to the other side of the Island for a change of scenery. This is on the beach at the Hale Koa hotel in Waikiki.

Poolside just before sunset.

I thought this was brilliant with the guy in the water and fishing at dusk. Nothing like sending out bait and pulling it right back towards you at feeding time. As Jeff Foxworthy would say "Here's your sign".
The end... for today.

We have been so busy getting on the road, spending time with family in Boise, getting to Hawaii, and doing activities, we haven't collected our thoughts and insights on the whole concept of this traveling adventure yet. We will get past captions for pictures and will add some commentary soon.

Aloha from Shelli.... I hope everyone is doing well. We will be adding more soon and having the kids contribute more of their thoughts. We are about to spend time relaxing by the beach and reflecting on our experiences so we can put them into words. (Shelli)
